January - February 2012

Latest News from David Borland’s trip (January 2012):

David was accompanied by retired teacher Mr. John Hall who has interested in all aspects of education in Tanzania.

David was once again concerned with the accounts and the costs of the new dormitory etc. Everything seems to be progressing well and we are hoping that the building may be finished sometime soon (click here for pics).  David reports that we are still having problems with education issues but that we hope these are resolved soon and education at Bethany may be resumed.

Secondary school pupils exam results:  Four of our children have finished form 4 at the local government secondary school (Sogeska). Two of our boys (Hamza and Elijah) passed to go to High School ( six form) passing with division 2 and division 3.  Our other boy Nyamarige got division 4 so will be offered a suitable training course.  Rehema our only girl also received division 4 and is presently undecided about her future. Once again the girls results were very poor. Of the 33 girls taking 9 subjects (243 results) the following marks were published: Number of girls passing a subject with Grade A = none,  Grade B = none,  Grade C = 8,  Grade D = 82,  Failed = 153. Only three girls took Physics and Chemistry.  All the girls failed Basic Maths.

The story for the boys was somewhat better.

Next trip:  Graham is due to visit on the 7th March for two weeks and so hopes to return with more news on progress of the new boys dorm and education.

Charity Name Change: Today the 12th December 2011 we received a letter from the Charity Commission saying that they had agreed to change the name of the Charity from ‘The Northern Evangelical Trust’ to ‘The Bethany Project (Tanzania) UK’.  We had asked for the name change as the name no longer reflected the work that was being done by the charity and led to some confusion on occasions. The name change takes effect from today.

Latest trip Following on the good work done by David and Graham (Earnshaw) and then Heather and Glenys in Oct Graham Pountain (the writer of this update) arrived in November for a 2 week stay.  Most of his time was spent helping std’s 4,5,6 and the secondary school children with their English. Click here to see the details. Other topics are covered below.

New Boys dormitory: On the 20th October 2011 work has started on the footings of one of the new boys dormitories. I am pleased to report that by the 1st December the foundations had been dug, the reinforced footing laid and the wall had been built up to floor level. As I was leaving  they were ready to lay the concrete for the floor, 6 inches thick with reinforcing. For pictures of the work so far click here. Click here to see the plans including a 3D impression.

This is the first of 6 dorms we plan to build, 4/5 for boys so that we can demolish the old boys dorm and 1/2 for the older girls.
Bethany ‘home tuition’ and future school: Our children are doing really well and working very hard.  All our primary aged children are registered at ‘Joseph and Mary’ school in Kitongo.  We have strong connections with this school as it is where China is working and we are told by one of our exteachers (Mr. Thomas) that she is the best teacher there!  Our Standard 4 children have just sat their national exams at this school where they had to board for a few days. We are very grateful to Chris Gates for allowing our children to register at his school and also for overseeing the education of our children at Bethany. Please see photos of the awards ceremony at the end of our school year.
Land Issue: We have now occupied the land for over 20 years having been given it by the Village authorities.  However some villagers have felt that we have not contributed enough to their well being despite using our vehicles for  transporting sick people to and from hospital, donating and distributing food in times of famine and of course looking after orphans etc. etc. Whilst on my visit Daniel received a letter from the Village leaders demanding we leave the land within 30 days.  We took all the paperwork we had to a land lawyer who confirmed we had title to the land and just the fact that we had occupied the land for over 12 years was enough. The lawyer wrote a letter to the village leaders to explain the position and we hope that this helps clarify the position.

Bethany School Registration: Now that we clarified the land situation we are proceeding to register our own school as the local Education authority are not happy that our 90 children are registered at ‘Joseph and Mary‘ school yet do not travel there every day (some 120km round trip).  Instead we employ teachers at Bethany which works out much better, much safer and more cost effective than hiring four/five mini buses to make the journey every day. We already have an agreed school mission statement.  We intend registering the name of the school as ‘The Bethany Family school (for orphans)’.  We have deliberately included the words ‘for orphans’ so that everyone is aware that this is not a private fee paying school.
Choir: The choir are still practicing hard with both Swahili and English songs.  On this trip I introduced them to a song by Duggie Dug Dug called ‘Glory and Honour’.  They have been practicing hard especially the signing (for the deaf). Click here to see the video.
New Children: One new boy joined whilst I was there - his name is Daudi Michael Henga and I will include details later. Click here to see his photo

Students in England:
Our three young women are all working hard as usual. All three (Emma, Jesca and Sophia) are studying for their BA in Education, Emma and Jesca in their 2nd year and Sophia in her 1st year.  Our girls are doing well with their GCSE History and both Jesca and Emma (and me) have completed a 120 hour online advanced TEFL course (Teach English as a Foreign Language) as well as learning to drive.

Prospective UK Students: No further developments.
Children’s rights:  No further developments.

Training for older children :  We have 8 children on various training courses

Secondary school children:  We have 20 children attending secondary school (8 girls and 12 boys).  Three of our boys are in form 4 and have now finished their final exams.  They are Hamza, Elijah and Nyamarige.  Hamza is predicted a division one result, Elijah division 2 and Nyamarige a division 3.  It may be that all three pass to go onto high school when their results are published in January 2012.  Our only other student to pass with a division 3 was Emmakulatha Bujiku (now studying in the UK).

Half Way House: No progress at present

Other Improvements/Refurbishments: The refurbishment of the girls dormitory is now completed
New vehicle:
We already have an amount of money set aside for this but still need about
£12,000 to buy a new Toyota pickup truck.

Finance: Now that we have undertaken the education of our children on site our monthly estimate for each child has risen by about £10 per month - making a total of £50 per month.

For every £7 the Tanzanian government has to spend (GDP) (2006)on each person these are the figures for comparison

Tanzania

£7

Kenya

£12

Uganda

£17

South Africa

£121

United Kingdom
