Over the years I have found it very difficult to instigate informal discussions / debates with the Tanzanian children especially in mixed classes due to the girls being afraid that the boys may laugh at them. On this occasion I used various articles short videos and full length films to help. One of the most popular videos was on YouTube: ‘Look at yourself after watching this’ This was about a man with no arms and legs and was a real eye opener for many of the children. They all had something to say about it from sheer disbelief to a feeling of gratitude for what they had. Another short YouTube video was: The Best Speech - Severn Suzuki This was a 6 Min speech by a young 12 year old girl at a UN conference in 1992. Again this started some interesting discussions. I also showed ‘ How to save a life’ and ‘Dead Poets society’. On the light entertainment side I showed some episodes of Merlin and some Tom and Jerry for the little ones.
