ABG Golfers Support the Bethany Project

Return to News Page

A group of BEAL and ABG employees from the Bulyanhulu Gold Mine recently visited the Bethany Project near Mwanza to donate money collected at the ABG Open Golf Days, held on the BGM golf course over the past two years. The ABG Open organizer, Sarah Thompson (who recently left BGM), wished to see the funds being used for a good cause - thus the Bethany Project was suggested.

The Bethany Project (www.bethanyfamily.net) is a donor-funded orphanage and school situated between Mwanza and the Serengeti on Lake Victoria. It currently caters for 133 orphans who have no family or relatives to care for them. This well managed organization is making a considerable difference in the area by caring for orphans to beyond the school leaving age. Our own Rehema Hamadi (kindergarten teacher at Buly School), who is a product of the Bethany Project, was assisted with her tertiary education in the UK by the Bethany family. She is a wonderful example of what can be achieved by organizations such as this.

A total of 3,630,000 Tsh were donated as well as numerous soccer balls and basketballs donated by Rob Reukl of BGM and containers of biscuits donated by Toshi and Trevor Rau of BEAL. The staff and children were delighted to receive visitors and welcomed the much needed funds with great appreciation and enthusiasm.

The UK coordinator, Graham Pountain, mentioned that this was the single biggest donation received by the Bethany Project from a Tanzanian donor and thanked the ABG golfers for their wonderful support.

The money was collected during the tournaments from players and supporters from all the Tanzanian ABG operations, BEAL and ABG Corporate golfers based in Johannesburg and London. The majority of the money came from the Bulyanhulu golfers, their supporters and the sponsors, Jachris Hose and Couplings.

Bulyanhulu International Primary School has been supporting the Bethany Project since the beginning of the year and will continue to do so in future by facilitating and delivering donations.
