Jade’s report (August trip 2010 )

Visiting Bethany this summer is easily the highlight of my year!  It was one of the most exciting, interesting, eye-opening, emotional and fun things I have ever been a part of, which I am incredibly grateful for.

Everything about Bethany itself exceeded my expectations. The living quarters were of a much higher standard than I expected, the food situation was no way near as tough as I thought it would be and the children’s standard of English amazed me more and more each day.

My best moment, well there’s three that stand out; hearing the choir sing for the first time, seeing a young girl who I became very close to earn star of the day after a not so bright start with us, and a very poorly child being so strong and getting out of bed to attend my last lesson with him. The worst moment has to be visiting another orphanage and seeing how unhappy the children looked in comparison to ours at Bethany was a big reality check.

The three classes I taught were standard three, six and form one. All were so eager to learn and so clearly wanted to better themselves. The topics I enjoyed teaching included The Very Hungry Caterpillar and a project based on Lucky Dube. I enjoyed them the most because I could see the children were so engaged and loved the varied activities I planned for them.

An incredibly worth-while experience which I would recommend to anyone!
