Teacher’s Report

Student:  Janes Manuari

Throughout these eight weeks of teaching Janes, he has been able to demonstrate different skills; these skills include taking responsibility for his own learning, confident in speaking and writing English. The visit to England has really made a significant impact on Janes’s development, not only academically but also he has helped him to see things in a different perspective and shaped his behaviour.

During his visit in the UK, Janes had an opportunity to learn and develop his knowledge in different subjects particularly English, Science and mathematics.

Mathematics

In mathematics Janes learnt different concepts. All activities were incorporated with practical examples, relating to real life situations so that to enable him to apply the knowledge not only in class but also outside the classroom. For instance I remember in one lesson I used apple to demonstrate what half, quarter, third, whole, three quarters were. Therefore I made sure he was able to apply it practically.  The following topics were covered in Maths lessons:

  • Fractions: adding, subtracting, equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions,
  • Solving equation
  • Algebra
  • Area of squares and rectangles, areas of regular and irregular shapes
  • Calculating are and perimeter
  • Mental maths test
  • Decimal and percentages
  • In addition everyday Janes did a mental maths test for five to ten minutes. The questions included different areas in mathematics. The mental tests helped him to be competent in maths.
  •  English

In English we concentrated mainly on the grammar; the following are the areas that we covered

  • Punctuation
  • Story writing ( write creative stories)
  • Verbs and Adverbs
  • Descriptive writing
  • Present and past tense
  • Adjectives
  • Janes also had a chance to improve his reading and speaking skills. Hence Janes now he is able to read following different punctuation and can use appropriate expressions. Not only that, Janes is now confident in writing creatively using his own imagination.  During lessons we also had some discussions on different topics, for example we once discussed about ‘what makes someone a hero, can anyone become a hero?’ Janes was so enthusiastic and really made some really good arguments. In return, he is now working hard to develop his critical thinking skill (thinking for himself!).
  • Jane’s writing has really improved during these eight weeks. For example he is now able to structure a sentence, describe things, people and action using appropriate adjectives and adverbs. Not only that, he can read using appropriate expressions. Overall Janes has really worked hard in English.  Consequently his English has significantly improved, and this has built him a really good foundation ready for when he goes to secondary school.

    Science

In science, I covered the following topics:

  • Life processes
  • Habitats
  • Animal and plant cells
  • Gravity
  • Water cycle
  • Photosynthesis
  • In science Janes has developed his knowledge about the seven life processes. He is now able to remember the processes through the acronym: MRSGREN
  • M-Movement
    S-Sensitivity
    R- Respiration
    G-Growth
    R-reproduction
    E - Excretion
    N- Nutrition

Furthermore, Janes now understands more about Gravity, photosynthesis, water cycle, habitats and cells. Overall Janes has worked really hard in science.

Therefore as Jane’s, I am so proud of his achievement. I hope he keep his hard work when he goes back to his own school in Tanzania.  Janes is a very hard working child, and because of this, he was able to get a lot from these eight weeks. I just hope that he will keep on working hard.

To sum up Janes is a hard-working boy who gave his best in everything.   His opportunity to receive education for these eight weeks has been exceptionally productive. However he needs to build on this when he goes back to school and take confidence from what he has achieved.

Janes has developed a lot of confidence in communicating in different ways, taking the initiative in class work and was always willing to work hard in areas where he felt he was less confident. He has developed a very good understanding in finding solutions to practical problems.  I hope this developing confidence will encourage him to take the initiative and will allow him to make informed choices and decisions in the future.
