Morecambe bay walk (241 pics),  Video (12mins)

March - April trip: David Borland (treasurer) accompanied by Dr. Michael Clark and Dr. Steve Austen. David’s job as always was to check every invoice and to note what prices have changed etc. Steve Austen and Michael Clark helped with the teaching. Please read Michael Clark’s report here
Morecambe Bay Walk: Derek Hartley, a UK team member had volunteered to organise this event. All the arrangements were made, the flyers sent out, the forms filled in, ready for the big day. Our three Tanzanian students Emmakulatha, Jesca and Sophia were looking forward to the day although it must be said that Emma was a little apprehensive as a few years earlier Daniel had done the walk and had reported that it was ‘terrible’ mainly due to the coldness of the water!  As it turned out the day was sunny though a little windy.  Arriving at 11 am we were surprised to see so many people supporting the event.  Supporters old and new numbering nearly 300 in total with another 40 or so walkers supporting other charities. Everything went according to plan with many diversions as we avoided the quick sand and waded for what seemed like miles through knee deep water. Derek tells me that he now thinks the walk will have raised over £10,000 with the largest sum raised by Colne High school who collectively raised over £2,000.  As always I had my camera to hand and took a few pics (over 200) and some 12 mins of video. Hopefully somewhere your picture will be there!
Finally a big thank you to all those who took part in the walk which was a big success and we hope to repeat the walk next year!  We are also wondering whether an 7.5 mile walk between Christmas and New Year might be an idea so that all those who don’t need Christmas presents could ask for sponsorship instead.  It may also be good for a little exercise after the over-eating at Christmas!  So keep Sunday the 29th December clear for our local 7.5 mile walk - details to follow. (if you have an idea for a good circular walk locally email me)
Photographs here and Video here.
Next trip: July 1st to the 19th: Graham (coordinator) together with Emmakulatha, Jesca, Sophia, Umarah. Kimberley, Marjorie and Sharon are hoping to be busy with a variety of activities. We are hosting a visit from Derby Grammar School on Sunday the 14th July when 20 volunteers arrive for a day at Bethany. The first weekend we are there we have our reunion weekend when all those who have been nurtured at Bethany return to be reunited with their fellows and to catch up on all the news. Marjorie is hoping to run a first aid course and the others are hoping to do a great deal of teaching both at Bethany and in the local government schools.  Maths and English will be the main topics.
Out theme for the week will be ‘Walk the Talk’ and ‘Practice what you Preach’. We are all allowed two 23kilo bags and one 7kilo hand luggage bag. We have been collecting many book and resources which we will be filling our bags with.

Old news but still current

Secondary Education: This year we only had one girl in form 4 (no boys) at the local secondary school. Bethany girl Mpelwa along with all the other 39 girls in her class failed to reach the standard needed to go to High School. Tanzania celebrated its worst year ever for secondary school results with the majority of schools having no candidates for High School.  86% of students failed to get high enough grades to go onto form 5 (high school).  These are national results for government secondary schools with the schools in towns doing better than those in the villages like ours.

Sogesca Secondary School (over 900 students) where our children attend has been open since 2007 and in the last 6 years only 2 girls have passed to go to High School. The picture is much better for boys where over 20 have passed to go on to high school.
Results for this years form 4 secondary school exams  click here:

Articles appearing in the Tanzanian press concerning the issue:

Article 1Article 2Article 3

At present in form 4 we have 2 boys Emmanuel and Ntare who, we believe, stand a chance of passing to go to High School due to the extra education they receive at Bethany.  Unfortunately our 5 girls are unlikely to pass to go to High School and will have spent 4 years at Secondary and have little to show for it.  If we are allowed to educate at Bethany we believe that they will pass.  We also have 9 children in Form 3 and 7 children in form 1 (none in form 2) and unfortunately none of these are likely to pass secondary education to go on to High School unless we are allowed to educate full time at Bethany.

Further Education and Training: We have Elijah at High school, Hamza at 6th form College and Phabian, Mohamed and Nyamarige on Veta training courses. We also have Emma, Jesca and Sophia in the UK on the BA degree course.

Primary school:  Approximately 75 of our children attend the local village government primary school.  Unfortunately the school has few resources and few dedicated committed teachers.

New School for Bethany: We are fortunate to have met a young Tanzanian man Clement Maxime who has agreed to help us amend the school plan without charge. Clement has been helped with his education by a French charity and says he is helping to repay the debt he feels he owes for such help.  Clement is also looking to design an amphitheatre  for assemblies etc.  We are still waiting for the new district to become fully functional with its own officials so that we can move forward. Of course we are a long way off having enough funds to complete the project but we feel we have enough money to make a start.

Blackburn College: We presently have three young women  (Emma, Jesca and Sophia) studying for their BA in Education, Emma and Jesca in their 3rd year and Sophia in her 2nd year.  On Monday the 11th March Blackburn University Centre agreed to sponsor Emma and Jesca to do a 12 month PGCE course starting September 2013.  They have also agreed to sponsor Fatuma for the BA course in ‘Education’ starting in September 2013 subject to her passing her IELTS Academic English exam required by the U.K.B.A.which she will have to sit in Nairobi in June.  They have also agreed to sponsor students for the 2 year Diploma course in ‘Children’s Learning and Development’.
We are so grateful for these opportunities.  Already 5 of our girls who have received education in the UK (Eva, Rehema, China, Minza and Fatuma) are gainfully employed, two of them as teachers at Bethany, Rehema and  Eva as teachers elsewhere and China who is an administrator for a charity based in Mwanza.  All those students who come to the UK now we hope will also study GCSE subjects Maths, Science, English, History and R.E.

New Girl: We had been asked by Amy from Forever Angels if we would consider taking one of her older girls who suffers from Cerebral Palsy. Her name is Jennifer Elizabeth Amani who is 5yrs old and she came to Bethany on Friday 8th March. Photo here.

Penpals: Sadly some of the letters received at Bethany were lost in a big tidy up operation. Also unfortunately the book we keep which records letters received and sent has been tampered with. In the back of this book were kept the addresses of all the penpals.  These pages are now missing and we believe our penpals may receive letters from the person who stole the addresses purporting to be from Bethany and ultimately asking for money.  Please be aware that these letters are not from any of the staff or children and may well be malicious in nature with the ultimate purpose of asking for money.  Please let us know if you receive such a letter.  Click here to see the photos of some of the letters received.

Other Improvements/Refurbishments:
New vehicle:
We already have an amount of money set aside for this but still need about
£15,000 to buy a new Toyota pickup truck.

Finance:  Presently we are looking at ways of financing the plans we have for a new school - education on site.  If you have any ideas please let us know.

Countries wealth compared
For every £7 the Tanzanian government has to spend (GDP) (2006)on each person these are the figures for comparison

Tanzania

£7

Kenya

£12

Uganda

£17

South Africa

£121

United Kingdom

£309

As you can see both Kenya and Uganda have nearly twice as much money to spend per person as Tanzania whilst the South African government has 17 times the amount to spend on it’s people.
The UK government has 44 times the amount to spend per person.
