Reunion Day: This years reunion day is planned for the weekend of the 14th/15th July.  All ex-Bethany children are welcome.  Last year the event went really well with nearly 20 ex- Bethany children attending.  It is a time when they can all meet up and exchange stories of life outside Bethany.  The programme includes playing games and seeing themselves on video (when they were children) and getting to know some of our new children (their new brothers and sisters).  Many of our ex-Bethany children are now supporting the work financially and we look forward to the day when all the funding comes from those children who have been helped by Bethany (we are many years away from this at the moment).  Click here to see pics of last years reunion

Agriculture: The site workers and children are presently preparing a sizable acerage of land for planting maize.  We already grow many different types of vegetables and some friut.

New Boys dormitory: The new boys dorm (max beds 28) is now finished and 27 boys have moved in together with their care-worker Robert. The building consists of one large dormitory for 20 boys (10 bunk beds = 5 either side with a window between) and two smaller rooms which take two bunk beds each( 2 x 4 beds).  At the end of the building to the right is a toilet block with 3 wc’s, 2 urinals and 1 wash-basin.  To the left is a shower block with 3 showers and 3 wash basins. Click here for pictures.
P.S. The cost of the dorm was approx £25,000 and we could do with building several more.

Secondary school children and leavers:  We have 17 children attending secondary school (7 girls and 10 boys).   All are doing well and we are trying to improve their maths and English.  Hamza, Elijah, Nyamarige and Rehema have now left  secondary school.  Hamza has passed with a division 2 and is waiting to attend a technical College in Arusha.  Elijah passed with division 3 and is now attending a high school in Mwanza.    Nyamarige (passed with division 4) is hoping to be accepted on a teacher training course.  Rehema (passed with division 4) has got an office job at a local commercial farm.

Next two trips to Bethany this summer:  In July the following people will be visiting Bethany for just over 2 weeks : - Graham (co-ordinator), Emmakulatha, Jesca and Sophia (Tanzanian students) together with Umarah and Yasmin (visitors).  The Tanzanian girls intend to be very busy with lessons concentrating on English Maths and Science.

The second week the Jesca and Emmakulatha will be visiting various places interviewing people and students to help with their assignments from College (towards their degree).  They are hoping to visit both the local schools and the government officials in Magu.  Our local District Commissioner has been replaced and soon the area is to be split into two separate districts and we will be in the new district.  The second trip is during the last two weeks in August - details to follow.

Ex - Bethany children. Yohanna has finished his training course and has been returned to live with relatives as he looks for a job. Phabian Juma is now on a hotel management course.  Paulo James having finished his tourism course is also looking for work.

Education: Our children attend both the local Primary and Secondary Government schools. However, we supplement the education at Bethany in the evenings and at weekends.

Water Problems:  We have recently had problems from both our water pumps. The mains water pump has finally drowned after several attempts at repair.  Our solar pump which has served us well for over ten years is pumping very very slowly and we feel it is on its last legs.  We have applied for a grant ( from a UK charity)  for a new grundfos pump which is able to use either solar power or mains power but as yet we do not know if our application stands any chance of success.  On cloudy days we fetch the water in buckets the Tanzanian way!

New School: No Progress The good news is plans have been passed for us to build a school at Bethany. The plan includes 8 classrooms which have to be built to government regulations (9 metres x 7 metres) which are designed to hold 40 children (although in government schools very often many more children are accommodated in such classrooms).  Of course 8 x 40 children = 320 children and we only really wanted to accommodate our children ( approx 80 pre-school and primary aged children).  We are told we first have to build the school with adequate toilets and ancillary buildings and then it has to be inspected at two area levels before registration is given.  We anticipate the cost to be about £125,000 and as of yet we have no funding to start this work.  If anyone has any ideas about how we might fund this project by way of donation, awards or grants then we would be pleased to hear from you.
Children;
Choir: We have a new choir group consisting of 8 girls and 3 boys who would like the opportunity to visit England to improve their English and further their studies as well as visiting their friends and supporters. We will need permission from Social Welfare and if successful we are planning for them to come to the UK at the end of September to the middle of November (6 weeks).

Students in England:
Our three young women are all working hard as usual. All three (Emma, Jesca and Sophia) are studying for their BA in Education, Emma and Jesca in their 2nd year and Sophia in her 1st year.  Our three girls should finish their time in England with five good GCSE’s including English, Maths and Science, a Diploma in ‘Childcare and Education’, a BA honours degree from Lancaster University in ‘Educational studies’ and a post graduate certificate in education (qualifying them as teachers).  They will be a great asset to us as we open our new school (funds permitting) as qualified teachers.

Prospective UK Students: No further developments.
Children’s rights:  No further developments.

Training for older children :  We have 8 older children on various training courses

Half Way House: No progress at present

Other Improvements/Refurbishments:
New vehicle:
We already have an amount of money set aside for this but still need about
£12,000 to buy a new Toyota pickup truck.

Finance:  Presently we are looking at ways of financing the plans we have for a new school.  If you have any ideas please let us know.

Countries wealth compared
For every £7 the Tanzanian government has to spend (GDP) (2006)on each person these are the figures for comparison

Tanzania

£7

Kenya

£12

Uganda

£17

South Africa

£121

United Kingdom

£309

As you can see both Kenya and Uganda have nearly twice as much money to spend per person as Tanzania whilst the South African government has 17 times the amount to spend on it’s people.
The UK government has 44 times the amount to spend per person.
