Visit by our New District Commissioner Mr Paul Mzindakaya:

On Tuesday the 10th July we were visited by Paul Mzindakaya our new District Commissioner Apparently boundaries have been re-organised and we are now in a new district (Busega) in a new region (Simiyu).  We explained several ongoing issues including the problems with the land, education at Bethany, study tour and our older children being educated in the UK. We are happy to report that from our conversations it appears that Paul is a dynamic, forward thinking man of integrity with the gift of discernment.  He indicated that he wanted to see Bethany develop and that his main concern was for the welfare of the children in our care.  We could ask for nothing more and are hopeful that many of our outstanding issues will soon be resolved.  Indeed whilst over the past couple of years we have been very discouraged by decisions made at local and national level,  in one short conversation with our new DC we felt he understood what we were trying to achieve and wanted to encourage us in our endeavours.  We ask for your prayers for Paul as he goes about his work to genuinely improve the living conditions of his people and that he is not discouraged by others who do not share his aspirations.

Education at Bethany:
Primary
Recently the headmaster of the local government primary school visited Bethany to thank us for the education our children had received whilst being educated at Bethany.  Apparently his school had become the top school in the ward (of 7 schools) due to the fact that 3 of our children were the 3 top scorers in national standard 4 mock exams making his school number 1 in the ward.  Our pupils who came top were Denis and Beckham both with 84% and Mohamed with 83%.

Secondary Emma and Jesca (2 of our students studying for their BA’s) visited the local government secondary school and spoke to the headmaster.  He told them that some of the children in form 3 and form 4 held important positions as prefects etc and also commented that he could ‘TRUST’ any of the 17 Bethany children at his school.  We were very pleased by this comment about trusting our children since above all we are hoping to instill in our children certain Christian values and Honesty is one of our foundation stones.  Academically he felt some of our form 2 children were not working as hard as they should and we are now putting extra effort in to helping them at home especially with Maths.
Reunion Weekend: This year’s reunion day was held on the 14th/15th July (2012).  Twenty seven ex- Bethany children attended and exchanged stories of life outside Bethany.  The programme included playing games and seeing themselves on video (when they were much younger) and getting to know some of the new children (their new brothers and sisters).  Some of our leavers gave a short talk encouraging those still at Bethany to take advantage of every opportunity since life outside Bethany can be very difficult.  Three of our children regularly support Bethany financially and we awarded them each an alarm clock as a token of our thanks.  They were: China Joseph, Happiness Malale and Sumai Makoye.  A special thanks goes to Mwita Marwa for installing the electrical wiring in the new boys dorm for no charge and helping in many other ways. It was good to see how many of our children had matured and to see how realistic and sensible they had become.  Click here to see pics of this years reunion.  Click here to see the list of those who attended.

Agriculture: Our Maize is growing really well and we already grow many different types of vegetables and some fruit. Click here to see the crops we are presently growing

Secondary school leavers:    Hamza, Elijah, Nyamarige and Rehema have now left  secondary school.  Hamza is waiting to attend a technical College in Arusha.  Elijah is now attending a high school in Mwanza.    Nyamarige has now opted for a tourism and hotel management course and Rehema  has decided to stay on at Bethany teaching the pre-school children and studying to re-sit her form 4 exam to achieve a pass which will enable to go to teacher training college.

July  trip to Bethany:  In July the following people visited Bethany for just over 2 weeks : - Graham (co-ordinator), Emmakulatha, Jesca and Sophia (Tanzanian students) together with Umarah and Yasmin (visitors).  The Tanzanian girls intend to be very busy with lessons concentrating on English Maths and Science. Umarah and Yasmin helped out wherever they could.

The second week Jesca and Emmakulatha visited various places interviewing people and students to help with their assignments from College (towards their degree).  They visited both the local schools and the government officials in Magu.  The second trip is during the last two weeks in August - details to follow.

Ex - Bethany children.  Phabian Juma is now on a hotel management course.  Paulo James having finished his tourism course is now looking for work and Mwita has offered to look after him in Mwanza where he can help Mwita at the same time as looking for work.

Education: Our children attend both the local Primary and Secondary Government schools. However, we supplement the education at Bethany in the evenings and at weekends.  We would very much like to provide full time education on site without having to build the school below.

Water Problems:  Our water problems have been resolved with the provision of a new water pump bought with funds provided by a charity 02H.  Just days before we left for the July trip Daniel reported that the UV filter was no longer working.  We therefore bought a new unit but on arrival we managed to repair the old one so we now have a spare which may in time come in very useful.  We are in negotiations with the villagers and with the help of the new DC we hope to be able to put a new standpipe just outside our main gate for use by the villagers.  We would like to publicly thank 02H for providing the funds for all this work as it will provide life giving water not only for our children but for the villagers as well.  Thanks 02H!  Click here to see the pics.

New School: No Progress The good news is plans have been passed for us to build a school at Bethany. The plan includes 8 classrooms which have to be built to government regulations (9 metres x 7 metres) which are designed to hold 40 children (although in government schools very often many more children are accommodated in such classrooms).  Of course 8 x 40 children = 320 children and we only really wanted to accommodate our children ( approx 80 pre-school and primary aged children).  We are told we first have to build the school with adequate toilets and ancillary buildings and then it has to be inspected at two area levels before registration is given.  We anticipate the cost to be about £125,000 and as of yet we have no funding to start this work.  If anyone has any ideas about how we might fund this project by way of donation, awards or grants then we would be pleased to hear from you.
Children; no new children
Choir: We have a new choir group consisting of 8 girls and 3 boys who would like the opportunity to visit England to improve their English and further their studies as well as visiting their friends and supporters. Our new District Commissioner is negotiating for them to come to the UK at the end of September to the middle of November (6/7 weeks).

Students in England:
Our three young women are all working hard as usual. All three (Emma, Jesca and Sophia) are studying for their BA in Education, Emma and Jesca in their 2nd year and Sophia in her 1st year.  Our three girls should finish their time in England with five good GCSE’s including English, Maths and Science, a Diploma in ‘Childcare and Education’, a BA honours degree from Lancaster University in ‘Educational studies’ and a post graduate certificate in education (qualifying them as teachers).  They will be a great asset as qualified teachers when we open our new school (funds permitting) or re-start education on site using the classrooms we have already provided.

Prospective UK Students: No further developments.
Children’s rights:  No further developments.

Training for older children :  We have 8 older children on various training courses

Half Way House: No progress at present

Other Improvements/Refurbishments:
New vehicle:
We already have an amount of money set aside for this but still need about
£12,000 to buy a new Toyota pickup truck.

Finance:  Presently we are looking at ways of financing the plans we have for a new school - education on site.  If you have any ideas please let us know.

Countries wealth compared
For every £7 the Tanzanian government has to spend (GDP) (2006)on each person these are the figures for comparison

Tanzania

£7

Kenya

£12

Uganda

£17

South Africa

£121

United Kingdom

£309

As you can see both Kenya and Uganda have nearly twice as much money to spend per person as Tanzania whilst the South African government has 17 times the amount to spend on it’s people.
The UK government has 44 times the amount to spend per person.
