July Trip 2010: Graham Pountain, Rachel Jones together with our 6 Tanzanian UK students visited Bethany for two weeks from 1st to the 17th July.  China was returning to Tanzania to start full time work having completed her diploma whereas the other 5 girls have returned to the UK to finish their respective courses. Whilst there the students took 8, 45 minutes classes everyday except Sunday.  Emma taught ‘Childcare and Education, Jesca taught English and Rachel taught Maths mainly to the older children (Primary and Secondary).  Our three younger girls; Minza taught English, Sophia taught Maths and Fatuma taught Science to our toddlers, standards one and two. Graham assisted Daniel with various aspects of the ongoing work.  Most of the older children from standard 3 upwards took some form of English tests.
Our timetable and Test results and the tests themselves are available here.
English test papers and resultsTimetable

I have posted many, many photos of the children in their respective classes: Education

Next Trip July 18th to August 4th: A group of ten led by Karen Ross are presently at Bethany to help with the education. They are: Karen Ross, Hollie North, Jade Malone, Melanie Dent, Charlotte Collins, Susan and Emily Harling, Carole, Hannah and Sophie Kay.
Students in England:
Our younger three girls (Minza, Sophia and Fatuma) are back in the UK waiting to go to help out at WEC camp . They will be back at Accrington and Rossendale College early in September to finish the 2nd year of their diploma in ‘Childcare and Education’. Our older two (Emma and Jesca) are waiting to start their degree course at Blackburn College. This is a BA in ‘Educational studies’ and will take three years to complete.  They may do a further 1 year PGCE after finishing the course.  Both Emma and Jesca are looking for part time work in the local area (up to 20 hours per week as per the terms of their student visas) especially with children to gain experience. If you know of any part time teaching assistant jobs or other suitable jobs please email me.
Primary Education: For some time now we have been employing teachers who have been helping with extra education whilst the children are at home at Bethany (after school and at weekends).  This has been very successful to such an extent that we would very much like to ‘home educate’ our children.  We have considered registering as a school but this is a long and difficult process.  We are however seriously considering registering our children with a local private school where our children can sit their national exams yet continue with their full time education at home. This would also relieve our local government primary school of approx. 80 of our children enabling them to provide more time and resources for the rest of the children attending from the village (about 400).   So far we are employing 3 full time teachers, 1 Montessori trained teacher (Madam Sigwa), 1 Kenyan trained teacher (Mr Robert Ouko) and a 4th form leaver from Kenya (Madam Winnie).  We have a fourth teacher in mind!

Teaching of English: It has become more and more apparent that the learning of English is very important for our children.  Unlike Kenya where English is taught as a first language Tanzania had adpoted Swahili as its national language.  Unfortunately this means they have to learn two languages, the second being English (as well as their own tribal language).  All secondary education, further education and training is done in English.  We have the advantage of sending volunteers from the UK to help with the teaching of English and we hope in the future to set a very high standard of English at Bethany.  If you are interested in helping with the teaching of English at Bethany please email me.

China Paulo:  Many of you will remember China, she is one of our oldest girls (22yrs) and has now completed her diploma in ‘Childcare and Education’ and returned to Tanzania. Before leaving the UK China, accompanied by David Borland (our treasurer), was flown to Northern Ireland for an interview with the trustees of the Tanzania Christian Farm Development’. This charity is in the process of building a children’s home in the Tabora region of Tanzania and are looking for girls like China to help run it (when completed). They are also interested in UK people who might be interested in getting the project up and running who might be prepared to stay for 12months - 2 years. If you are available please contact them.  In the mean time China has taken a job with an American funded charity based near Bethany who run a children’s home for girls and a primary school JBFC.  China has informed Chris (the director of JBFC) of her job opportunity at some future time with TCFD and has accepted a temporary job as a teacher looking after the nursery class (24 children) for the time being. Chris has been very supportive and we are hopeful that he may employ other Bethany girls in the future.  China’s temporary teaching job

Inappropriate Behaviour:
None to report this month.

Training for older children (preparing to leave). We now have 22 children doing further education or are at various training centres. 8 of our boys are receiving training at either of two VETA training establishments (carpentry, welding, etc.) and two boys are at Forever Angels.  4 of our girls have almost finished their training at Forever Angels and have been promised full time employment.  5 of our girls are studying in the UK and 3 are at Bethany receiving extra education and training.

Secondary school children:  We have 14 children attending secondary school (8 girls and 6 boys). All are working hard and receiving some extra education at Bethany.

Dining room and Kitchen:   Our  two new wood burning stoves are now fitted in our ‘dirty’ kitchen and then we shall start to sort out the possibility of fitting out the ‘clean Kitchen’ possibly using some electrical cooking equipment as well as providing the kitchen with clean work tops etc. Click here for pictures.

Container: We have discussed the possibility of sending a container but this looks unlikely due to the cost and also due to the fact that more and more materials are are becoming available in Tanzania.  One of the problems is sourcing the equipment in Tanzania.

Half Way House: No progress.
Bore-holes:
No further developments

New boys dormitory:  No news

Children’s health:   No problems at present.

Children’s behaviour: No problems at present.
Monthly Supporters / Enquirers Meetings: The dates for the next few meetings which are all on Sundays at 2pm are on our home page  They are held at Christ Church Hall, Christ Church Street, Roughlee Road, Christ Church Square, Accrington Lancashire. BB5 2LU.  Everyone welcome. (click here for details)
Pen pals group web site: This group continues to write to our children with letters of encouragement. We are always hopeful that some pen pals will one day become sponsors. Our visiting teams help write letters for the children.

Future Trips:  See details on our home / index page.

Please email if you are at all interested

Countries wealth compared
For every £7 the Tanzanian government has to spend (GDP) (2006)on each person these are the figures for comparison

Tanzania

£7

Kenya

£12

Uganda

£17

South Africa

£121

United Kingdom

£309

As you can see both Kenya and Uganda have nearly twice as much money to spend per person as Tanzania whilst the South African government has 17 times the amount to spend on it’s people.
The UK government has 44 times the amount to spend per person.
