January Trip 2010: David Borland, our treasurer visited for two weeks (21st Jan - 2nd Feb 2010).  As always David’s priorities include helping with the accounting system and checking budgets etc.  David checks every invoice and receipt on every visit to be able to verify that the money sent has been fully accounted for.  David also looked at the costings for finishing the new dining room and also the possibility of refurbishing the present boys dormitory with a new toilet block as we don’t have sufficient funds to build a new one.

Electricity: David reports that the mains electricity is continuing to be more reliable - it no longer goes off for hours at a time - only for a few minutes.  It only went off a couple of times in the two weeks David was there.   Our solar system is now only used for standby which is just as well as the batteries are slowly failing.

Primary education: We now have two teachers on site, A fourth form leaver and a Montessori trained teacher - they are helping with the teaching of the preschool and standard one children.

Adventure Playground !!!!!!!! - Developments....

Progress is going well.  The land on which the playground is situated is being landscaped with paths, flowers and trees.  Click here for pics

Dave and Vicky Shaw Safely returned to the UK and are now both looking for work and also the opportunity of sharing their experience with anyone interested!  If you would like to hear from them email them here.

Students in England: The six girls are all working hard. Emma and Jesca have now taken  their GCSE in Science (January) and will retake their GCSE English in June 2010.  Having passed their foundation GCSE in maths they are now studying for the higher module GCSE maths.  China is preparing for her return in July this year
Minza, Sophia and Fatuma are also started studying the foundation GCSE maths and hope to take the exam in June.

Inappropriate Behaviour:
None to report this month

Secondary school children:  The following children have started form 1 at secondary school: Deborah Benjamin, Elizabeth Robert, Kandise Kalokola, Annastazia Peter, Stella Magulyati, Nkamba Ezekiel, Ntare Zachariah and Emmanuel Shaban.  Hopefully they will study hard and take advantage of whatever the school has to offer.
Bore-holes:
No further developments

New boys dormitory:  We are  now seriously considering the possibility of refurbishing the present boys dormitory with a new toilet block rather than replacing it as we do not have sufficient funds.

Dining room and Kitchen:  The building has now been rendered and the ceiling is in place. We hope soon to have the tiles laid and after that we will need to fit out the kitchens. We have two kitchens, one is what we call the ‘dirty’ kitchen (‘smoky’ would be a more appropriate name) where we burn wood for cooking and the other is the clean kitchen which will use electricity to cook food when we have the funds to fit it out.

Half Way House: No progress.

Children’s health:   No problems at present.

Children’s behaviour: No problems at present.
Monthly Supporters / Enquirers Meetings: The dates for the next 5 meetings which are all on Sundays at 2pm are on our home page  They are held at Christ Church Hall, Christ Church Street, Roughlee Road, Christ Church Square, Accrington Lancashire. BB5 2LU.  Everyone welcome. (click here for details)
Pen pals group web site: This group continues to write to our children with letters of encouragement. We are always hopeful that some pen pals will one day become sponsors. Our visiting teams help write letters for the children.

Future Trips:  See details on our home / index page.

Please email if you are at all interested

Countries wealth compared
For every £7 the Tanzanian government has to spend (GDP) (2006)on each person these are the figures for comparison

Tanzania

£7

Kenya

£12

Uganda

£17

South Africa

£121

United Kingdom

£309

As you can see both Kenya and Uganda have nearly twice as much money to spend per person as Tanzania whilst the South African government has 17 times the amount to spend on it’s people.
