Interviewing Jesca, Emmakulatha and Sophia - Wednesday 5th February 2014

New classrooms, staff room and Teachers accommodation block:

You will see from the photos that the building work is well under way.  I left site on the 29th January and by then 4 classrooms had their footings built and were ready for the 6” reinforced concrete bases.  The top building which overlooks the classrooms which consists of the staff-room and head-teachers office is now complete with its 6” reinforced concrete base ready for the walls above base level to be built.  Work has also started on the accommodation block with the footing being dug out. Photos.  David our treasurer tells me we have enough funds to complete the 4 classrooms however, it is unlikely that the government will give us a licence for our school until it is complete with 8 classrooms and toilet block etc.

Primary school children:
We now have 66 children of primary school age.  The village school still lacks basic resources and has few motivated teachers. Beatings are frequent.
Secondary school children:
This January 14 girls and 6 boys joined the local government secondary school. Together with our children from form 2 and form 4 we now have 35 children at the school.  To use the term ‘school’ is a misnomer as whilst from the outside the students look smart and the buildings are impressive what goes on inside has little to do with education.  This school has not produced one girl with enough O levels to qualify to go high school in the last 6 years. We are talking of an intake of over 100 girls per year. So not one in 600 girls and all the girls fail maths!  You can be confident sending a girl to this secondary school that she will take 4 years to fail almost every subject.  However when it comes to beating and humiliating the girls especially by the female staff they are in league division 1.  Our girls in particular have been lined up and made to walk past a line of 6 female teachers with each one beating them in various places on their bodies including their bottoms, heads, hands and backs with sticks.  Any excuse will do.  When a member of staff at Bethany complained to the head teacher about the matter the head teacher had no knowledge of the incident and his comment was that the female staff were a ‘challenge’ to him.  The following day the same 20 Bethany girls were beaten once again this time for complaining.  Replace the word ‘teaching’ with ‘beating’ and you have the measure of what Education is focused on in a Tanzanian government secondary school. See the following clip
Beating of Bethany girls

New Children: We have several new children who can be seen here: Photos

Bethany Winter Wonderland Walk:
We are pleased to report the walk took place on a beautiful sunny winters day.  About 90 walkers turned up with the first walkers starting soon after 10am.  The weather both before and after the chosen day was rather wet and windy but the day itself couldn’t have been better.  Money is still coming in from sponsors but we expect the total to be somewhere in the region of £2,500 - so thanks to all who did the walk and also to those who sponsored our walkers.  Details of the walk are here.

Christmas Singing appointments:

All our singing appointments went really well.  We wish to thank Accrington Market hall and Tesco for giving the girls the opportunity of singing on their premises. All together about £500 was raised through the 4 singing sessions.

St James Church, Blackburn On Friday 13th Dec. at 7.30pm we had: ‘ An Evening of Christmas Music and Readings’ by The Elizabethan Singers of Blackburn with Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School. + The Bethany Girls. The retiring collection raised just over £1,000
.
Next Trip to Bethany:

Future Trips:
David Borland our Treasurer intends to visit in April / May.
