Choir return safely

The choir have returned safely to Bethany and are enjoying the sunny hot weather they missed so much during their 7 week stay in the UK. They visited over 100 schools, many churchs and other organisations raising the awareness of Bethany. Daniel and Eliada returned with them determined to improve the children’s education after being inspired by their visits to the various schools.  Click here for details of the choir trip.

November / December trip : Graham Pountain visited for 2 weeks at the end of November to help with the preparations for Dave and Vicky’s departure after their year long stay .  Daniel and Elaida would have liked Dave and Vicky to stay longer now they have plans to start doing more education at Bethany especially the teaching of English.

Electricity: We are pleased to report that the electricity is becoming more reliable - it no longer goes off for hours at a time - just a few minutes.  We still need our solar system and battery from time to time but we have found that our batteries are failing (worn out) and so the provision of mains electricty has come just in time.

Primary and Secondary education: The good news is that our local primary school is open once again.  Sadly some of the teachers don’t always appreciate some of the more modern methods of education and still take delight in beating their pupils especially the Bethany children.   More and more it becomes apparent that we need a better system of educating our children if they are to stand a chance of having any kind of future.

Adventure Playground !!!!!!!! - Developments....

Progress is still ongoing.  So far the football posts are in place, the three sets of double swings are finished together with the monkey bars, ramp, chain bridge etc,  Click here for pics

Dave and Vicky Shaw Have been in charge of the project for over seven weeks whilst the choir visited the UK.  This opportunity gave them a valuable insight into the finer points of how Bethany works!  The lack of commitment, willingness and appreciation of some members of staff (especially the men) disappointed them on occasions.  On the other hand the children responded very positively and other than the odd incident were very well behaved and eager to learn.  Click here for Dave’s pics

Students in England: China, Emma and Jesca are still working hard. Emma and Jesca are still studying for their GCSE in Science (exam in January) and will retake their GCSE English in June 2010.  Both Jesca and Emma are enquiring about the possiblity of doing a BA degree in education at Blackburn College.  China is doing really well and has excellent reports from her placements and expects to gain good grades in her diploma which will enable her to obtain a good job back in Tanzania when she returns in July this year
Minza, Sophia and Fatuma have been here since September (4 months ago) and are about to ‘enjoy’ their first Christmas in England. All the girls seem to become homesick around this time as they think back to their brothers and sisters in Tanzania and the glorious sunny weather they enjoy (all year round)    They appear to have settled in OK and are being helped by our three older girls.

Inappropriate Behaviour:
None to report this month

Older Children (leavers):Our Standard 7 leavers are waiting for their results whilst some of the girks have gone to Forever Angels for training in ‘Baby care’.  Two of our boys, Romadi and Kulwa are also at Forever Angels training to be caretakers - handy men.

Secondary school children: All doing well (from the education provided) and expect to be joined next year by some of our standard 7 leavers.
Bore-holes:
No further developments

Building work progress: Three major projects. To firstly double the size of the dining room,  build a new boys dormitory and a half way house for the older boys.

New boys dormitory:  No Progress. . Click here to see the plans  (Click here for pics of our present boys dorm).

Dining room and Kitchen:  The roof is on covering the new kitchen and dining room and the walls have been finished on the smaller wood burning kitchen. The timber trusses are also in place and we have enough money to finish the roof and render the walls and fix the ceiling boards.  We hope to be able to tile the floors throughout early in the new year.

Half Way House: We believe it would be beneficial to  provide accommodation for our older boys away from the Bethany site for various reasons.

Children’s health:   No problems at present.

Children’s behaviour: No problems at present now that some of the older boys have left.
Monthly Supporters / Enquirers Meetings: The dates for the next 5 meetings which are all on Sundays at 2pm are on our home page  They are held at Christ Church Hall, Christ Church Street, Roughlee Road, Christ Church Square, Accrington Lancashire. BB5 2LU.  Everyone welcome. (click here for details)
Pen pals group web site: This group continues to write to our children with letters of encouragement. We are always hopeful that some pen pals will one day become sponsors. Our visiting teams help write letters for the children.

Future Trips:  See details on our home / index page.

Please email if you are at all interested
