Emmakulata’s younger sister and parents all died with AIDS between the years 1989 and 1991. After the death of her parents and sister, Emmakuata became the responsibility of her grandmother (Paulina Helman). The grandmother is now suffering from high blood pressure and a long-term arm injury. The health problems of the grandmother prevent her from doing farm work. She found the responsibility of Emmakulata very difficult. To date Emmakulata is doing very well at school, loves to sing and communicates well with both children and adults.
