Education on site: As reported earlier we have been educating our primary and pre-school children on site (about 80 children in total) and they were registered for their national exams at a sympathetic private school.  We employed several teachers including two of our own young women holding diplomas acquired in the UK.  The children were doing exceptionally well in all subjects especially in English and Maths and all who visited Bethany commented positively including the various government officials.  However it was discovered that we shouldn’t be doing this (we are not a registered school) and so the officials insisted that we stop education on site and send our children back to the local government school.  This was rather sad as the children had been studying their subjects in English and now they had to revert back to learning in Kiswahili.  It was also disappointing for the local village school to have another 80+ children added to their number when already they had limited resources and few teachers.  We have volunteered to help in both the local Primary and Secondary schools with whatever resources we have available including taking lessons and we are patiently waiting for a positive response to various offers of help.

New School: The good news is plans have been passed for us to build a school at Bethany. The plan includes 8 classrooms which have to be built to government regulations (9 metres x 7 metres) which are designed to hold 40 children (although in government schools very often many more children are accommodated in such classrooms).  Of course 8 x 40 children = 320 children and we only really wanted to accommodate our children ( approx 80 pre-school and primary aged children).  We are told we first have to build the school with adequate toilets and ancillary buildings and then it has to be inspected at two area levels before registration is given.  We anticipate the cost to be about 125,000 and as of yet we have no funding to start this work.  If anyone has any ideas about how we might fund this project by way of donation, awards or grants then we would be pleased to hear from you.
Children; In general the children are all well except for the occasional case of Malaria from time to time. Once a year we take a photo of each child, measure their height and weight- click for:
Children’s photos with name labels, heights and weights

Home Tuition: We are trying to supplement the education received at the primary and secondary schools with extra tuition at Bethany.  Our children need to be educated enough to find a job so that they can support themselves, unlike the children in the village they have no relatives to support them after they reach the age of 18yrs.

New Boys dormitory: The new boys dorm (max beds 28) is almost ready. The roof is on and the rendering is finished and the tilers were laying the last few tiles as I was leaving Bethany.  Mwita (ex Bethany boy who trained in plumbing in the UK) is working on the dorm installing the showers and toilets and doing the electrical installation.  Click here for pictures.
Choir: We have a new choir group consisting of 8 girls and 3 boys who would like the opportunity to visit England to improve their English and further their studies as well as visiting their friends and supporters. We will need permission from Social Welfare and if successful we are planning for them to come to the UK at the end of September to the middle of November (6 weeks).

Students in England:
Our three young women are all working hard as usual. All three (Emma, Jesca and Sophia) are studying for their BA in Education, Emma and Jesca in their 2nd year and Sophia in her 1st year.  Our three girls should finish their time in England with five good GCSE’s including English, Maths and Science, a diploma in ‘Childcare and Education’, a BA honours degree from Lancaster University in ‘Educational studies’ and a post graduate certificate in education (qualifying them as teachers).  They will be a great asset to us as we open our new school (funds permitting) as qualified teachers.

Prospective UK Students: No further developments.
Children’s rights:  No further developments.

Training for older children :  We have 8 older children on various training courses

Secondary school children:  We have 17 children attending secondary school (7 girls and 10 boys).   Hamza, Elijah, Nyamarige and Rehema have now left  secondary school.  Hamza has passed with a division 2 and is waiting to hear which high school the government will send him to. Elijah passed with division 3 and is also hoping to go to High School.   Nyamarige and Rehema obtained a Division 4 and will not qualify to go to High School and are looking at alternatives.

Half Way House: No progress at present

Other Improvements/Refurbishments:
New vehicle:
We already have an amount of money set aside for this but still need about
12,000 to buy a new Toyota pickup truck.

Finance:  Presently we are looking at ways of financing the plans we have for a new school.  If you have any ideas please let us know.
